The workshop's aims are to foster discussion and further collaboration among graduate students and research groups from the University of Toronto and the University of Tokyo in the rapidly evolving field of emerging materials and systems.

This event is the first to be held at the University of Toronto under the auspices of the newly signed agreement between the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, University of Toronto, and the School of Engineering, University of Tokyo. The focus will be on information technology, biotechnology and manufacturing technology. The workshop will involve several units from across the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, including the hosting department Materials Science and Engineering, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the Nortel Institute for Telecommunications, the Energenius Centre for Advanced Nanotechnology, the Centre for Advanced Coating Technologies, and the Toronto Microanalysis Centre.
